The zoo was founded in 1864 by French Governor Pierre-Paul de la Grandière and is now one of the best and largest recreational areas in Saigon. The place is divided into three section that includes the animal conservation area, the Botanical garden, and a children’s play area.
Today, the zoo is home to over 500 animals, including monkeys, white tigers, hippos, lions, elephants, turtles, snakes, and so on, and the botanical garden has a diverse array of flora and fauna, including over 1800 trees and 260 plant species, some of which are over 100 years old. 20 different orchid varieties, 32 cactus species, 34 bonsai species, and a lake teeming with tropical fish round out the scene.
