Get ready to rock in mid-February as Saigon Psych Fest, an international festival of mind-bending rock descends for a three-day stint in Saigon.
Well, what is psych-rock anyway? It’s a style of music that’s been around for decades but has also evolved with the times. Psych-Rock got started in the mind-altered drug-fueled days of the 1960s with bands like Jefferson Airplane, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, and The Velvet underground. It evolved through the ’80s and ’90s with bands like The Flaming Lips, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Spiritualized. In modern times we have Tame Impala, Black Moth Super Rainbow, and many more. Psych-rock is characterized by thought-provoking lyrics, fuzzy guitars, and a general flavor that expands the mind even if the listener is not stoned.
It’s Rock and Roll to be sure – not hard rock, not heavy metal, not punk rock. Psych-rock has its unique trippy flavor. While psych-rock got a foothold in the ’60s, it’s not only alive and kicking in modern times, but its happening here! For the second year, the guys at Locally Trapped Wildlife are bringing international acts together with the cream-of-the-crop psych bands in Vietnam to put on an event that is gonna be a blast. The international acts include, The Low Hums, Thee Lucifer Sams, and The Liverpool Psychedelic Society. The Vietnam-based acts include KLAF, Skeleton Goode, OPN AIR DRG MKT, The Sirens of Ha Long, K300, plus more. There will also be a very special appearance by local insta-legends Saigon Soul Revival with a set tailored to the event.
Spread out over three days at three very different venues, Yoko, Soma Saigon, and Arcan; there are going to be plenty of opportunities to see some top-notch bands deliver fantastic sounds.
