Built in 1927, by Mr. Bainier a French businessman, during the French colonial period in Vietnam, the place began to exist as a two-story building representing French cars as Citroen called the “Bainier Auto Hall”. In 1959, the place was renovated by Mr. and Mrs. Ung Thi to make a complex of 100 rooms the “Rex complex” with three cinemas, a cafeteria, a dance hall, and even a library, and was officially opened in 1961.
Until 1975, end of the Vietnam war, it housed the Abraham Lincoln library as well as the American information service welcoming the then well-known debriefings called the “5 O’Clock Follies”. Indeed, the always-existing rooftop bar where it is still good to lounge around at the aperitif time with a cocktail in hand was then the favorite meeting place for journalists and military.
After 1975 the Saigon Tourism Bureau took possession of the hotel and renamed it Ben Thanh (fortified port). The hotel was then used as a venue for the press conference announcing the reunification of Vietnam in 1976. In 1986, the hotel was renamed The Rex Hotel and was in 2008 classified as a 5 stars hotel.
Today, the Rex hotel offers some 289 rooms including 80 luxurious suites, a 75m2 « Gouverneur Suite », an « Imperiale Suite » (98m2), and a « Presidential Suite » of 200m2 including all the amenities that a hotel 5 star must own. The hotel is also the home of many restaurants, tea lounges, spa, swimming pools, rooftop bar, conference room, bingo club, shops etc …
At the top of the fifth and sixth floors, you can find two outdoor pools at the edge of mini gardens. Near the pools, the sun loungers line up and there it is pleasant to order there a refreshment or a snack with ease.
