Astronauts can now celebrate in style, with The Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar, create by G.H. Mumm and designed by Octave de Gaulle, the founder of an agency specializing in space designs. This champagne is wrapped in aeronautical-grade aluminum and has a stainless-steel opening and closing device allowing it to comply with Champagne regulations while also ensuring that it can withstand the extreme conditions of space. A ring on the neck secures the cork and allows for safe uncorking, while a button on the bottle’s bottom allows for easy serving. Because traditional pouring is impossible in zero-gravity conditions, de Gaulle designed the bottle to mimic the process. The Champagne escapes through the neck and collects in the ring that used to hold the cork. It can then be poured into a special glass and sipped by the astronauts once they arrive.
Space has an effect on Champagne as well, and the G.H. Mumm team has developed a special blend that can withstand the sensory changes that occur during flight. According to the brand, the Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar is made with grapes from the 2016 harvest, the majority of which are Pinot Noir grapes, and is supplemented with reserve wines from the previous five years. The Champagne will be available on Axiom Space’s upcoming missions. “Axiom’s collaboration with Mumm and the Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar recognizes that to bring humanity to space, we need to bring more than just humans,” said Michael Suffredini, president and CEO of the company.
