Haenyeo (sea women) are female divers in the Korean province of Jeju whose livelihood consists of harvesting a variety of mollusks, seaweed, and other sea life from the ocean. Known for their independent spirit, iron will, and determination, the Haenyeo are representative of the semi-matriarchal family structure of Jeju and many families relied on the Haenyeo for the majority of their income, Today, Haenyeos are celebrated as one of Jeju’s most valued treasures but like many other vestiges of the past, the sea-diving industry is victim to industrialization and climate change…
