China is building a futuristic cultural center looking like a massive floating cloud

Shenzhen (China) loves culture and to prove it the construction of another incredible cultural center has recently been announced. Japanese architecture firm SANAA, led by prestigious architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, won the Shenzhen Maritime Museum competition with their futuristic design featuring a billowing roofscape. The project, titled Clouds on the Sea, won the bid against other popular firms like Sou Fujimoto Architects, UnStudio, Kengo Kuma & Associates, etc.







The Planning and Natural Resources Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality and the Bureau of Public Works of Shenzhen Municipality specified that the requirements were that the scheme had to create a framework including educational areas, research spaces, and typical museum display spaces.







SANAA’s proposal was described by the firm as “floating architecture” with a floating cloud’s structure dipping down to provide structure and expanding upward to allow natural light to enter the interior spaces helping to reinforce the idea that the building is integrated into the surrounding mountainous landscapes.
