Azuma Makoto, the pioneer of the ‘botanical sculpture,’ has sent a Bonsai tree into space, sunk floral sculptures to the bottom of the ocean, frozen them in massive sculptures, and has produced countless experimental creations and exhibitions around the world that have shown aspects of flowers’ beauty from unprecedented perspectives. But what he likes the most is to spend his time contemplating the life and death of flowers. Alison Klayman’s documentary depicts how a former punk musician channeled his sensibility—part poet, part mad scientist—into the unlikely medium of floral art. You’ll never think of flowers the same way again after watching this.
