Azuma Makoto, the “botanical sculpture” pioneer, has sent a Bonsai tree into space, sunk floral sculptures to the bottom of the ocean, frozen them in massive sculptures, and created countless experimental creations and exhibitions around the world that have shown aspects of flowers’ beauty from unprecedented perspectives. But what he enjoys the most is contemplating the life and death of flowers. The documentary by Alison Klayman shows how a former punk musician channeled his sensibility—part poet, part mad scientist—into the unlikely medium of floral art. After watching this, you’ll never look at flowers the same way again.
