What is the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week?

As the name suggests it, the KLFW is a week-long fashion show in Kuala Lumpur, where the Malaysian Ready-to-Wear brands and emerging designers present their collections to journalists and buyers around the world via fashion shows.

Who can get to the Fashion Week and how to get accreditation?

The Fashion Week is an event reserved for the fashion professionals. It is attended only by invitation or accreditation. For all neophytes who would like to get in, we regret to inform you that this may be a bit complicated. Indeed, the shows are not open to the public. Journalists, bloggers, buyers, are accredited by the organizers and the Ready-to-Wear brands who also select the guests they wish to invite.

The KLFW why?

The Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week was created in 2013 as a B-2-C platform for Malaysian designers to present their Ready to Wear collections. Each year, the KLFW brings together more than 150,000 people over five days at the Kl Pavilion to attend collections of Malaysian designers.

KLFW: A bit of history…

Mr. Andrew Tan, Founder of Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week

The KLFW came after Mr. Andrew Tan, Founder of the event was invited to the Buckingham Palace for the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange where he puts the HRD Duchess of Cambridge and HRH The Countess of Wessex. The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange encourages both established and emerging talents from the world of power and talent, and more importantly: highlight sustainability. With the support of Tourism Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week has had the chance to travel to the world.

What is the difference between « Ready-to-Wear » fashion shows and « Haute Couture »?

KLFW is about « Ready to Wear ». As its name suggests it, the « Ready-to-wear » is immediately marketable. You can find the majority of the Fashion Week fashion show collections a few months later in stores. In contrast, the « Haute Couture » is not always marketed. Designed for an exclusive clientele, it serves as a showcase and as a playground for fashion designers.

The Fashion Week, how is it? Which designer can participate?

Do not get in the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week who wants! Every year, the organizers decide on the fashion week’s calendar which brand that will present their collections. This year, in collaboration with AirAsia, KLFW organized the AirAsia Runway Ready Designer Search 2018 where 5 winners were already selected. In add, an exciting mix of designers is featured. All the designers showcased this year have never been seen before; providing viewers a first-hand look at the design presented in Kuala Lumpur Fashion week 2018. I spotted a piece that I like on the show, how do I get it?

You will certainly find it in few months in store but beware because the Fashion Week is also a show where creators let their imaginations and desires run wild. Most parade pieces are “smoothed” before entering the shop, in order to satisfy as many customers as possible. So, it’s better to contact the designer directly during the Fashion Week if you have the opportunity!
