The human population is growing at a rate of about 70 million people per year, and by 2050, we will have surpassed the 9 billion mark. We need to double our food production, and we have already depleted 70% of the land and a large portion of the oceans. A solution must be found immediately, and yes, you read that correctly: insects may be the solution to world hunger.
Though you may find it repulsive, approximately two billion people worldwide have tried it. You’ll be surprised to learn that you already eat these creepy crawlies on a daily basis. Most processed foods sold in supermarkets contain some quantity of insect. Certain canned fruit juices allowed it up to 1 maggot per 250mlIt as insects are extremely nutritious. Caterpillars, for example, contain more protein and iron than the same amount of minced beef. Today, there are approximately forty tons of insects for every human and it’s more than sufficient.
So brace yourself and give it a shot! Insects are widely available in Vietnam but the best place to try them is in China, at the Donghuamen night market in Beijing. You name it, they have it, from steaming stalls of centipedes, silkworms, and scorpions to deep fried crickets, spiders, or beetles. If you want to try the Australian ones, the crispy, yellow “Eggy” center roasted Witiji grub, enormous wood-eating moth larvae is your best bet. With over 1000 varieties of insects edible to humans, surely there’s something for everyone…
