From the organizer

This collection, which has been two years in the making, explores the artist’s fascination with the vast array of windows in urban Vietnam, and how they have become a significant and reoccurring element within her artworks.

‘I draw a lot of urban scenes and I realised, more and more, that doors and windows are an important ingredient in my work. I am irresistibly drawn to them. In most cultures, the style of windows and doors is what differentiates the urban landscape from one region to another. I want to discover what styles collectively make up the visual character of Vietnam streets.

Quietly; look in through windows to discover what lies within.

Smiling; receive the dawn sun and evening breezes that visit my room.
Freely; the tendrils of music and voices move round windows of temples and old houses. Reverently; step over thresholds into pagodas or catch a glimpse of the silence and rituals through pierced screens and grills.
Gaze up to find the old windows that still remain – be sad every time we lose beautiful windows to the wrecking ball for we are entering the age of closed windows and air-con in Vietnam’s towns.’

Originally from England with a background of eighteen years as a Product Designer, Bridget continued to develop her skills and practice during her years teaching at Leeds College of Art, which is where she learnt the art of etching. She has called Vietnam home for the past four years and during that time has explored, and been inspired by, different areas of the country including Hoi An and Sapa. The work from which has since been published in two books ‘A Summer in Sapa’ and ‘A Week in Hoi An’. Bridget will be running two workshops alongside this exhibition – more information HERE!
