The most expensive diamond in the world an incredibly rare gem known as « The pink star » was sold for $71.2 million last week at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong making it the most expensive diamond ever to be sold. The sale lasted for five minutes before the winning offer came by phone from Chow Tai Fook a jewelry group chaired by Henry Cheng who’s got his family ranked third on Forbes’ Hong Kong rich list with USD17.9 billion.
The sparkling oval-cut rock measures 2.69 by 2.06 centimeters (1.06 by 0.81 inches) and weighs 11.92 grams (0.026 pounds). His extraordinary size and the richness of color surpasses any known pink diamond record in History.
Previously a 12.03-carat “Blue Moon of Josephine” was bought for the record price of USD48.4 million (HKD376 million) by Hong Kong property tycoon Joseph Lau. In may 2016 the record was a jewel sold by Christie’s in Geneva a 14.62 karat « Oppenheimer Blue » sold $57.54 million.
