THE MOST DEADLIEST ASIAN DELICACIES

 

When we travel in Asia, many of us take pride in experimenting new foods but some of these delicacies can make us violently ill or can even be fatal. From Fugu in Japan to the Thai Bat soup, here are the deadliest food in Asia.

 

 

Fugu (Pufferfish)

 

 

The Fugu is eaten fried, raw (Sashimi), boiled or with some miso soup and can be drunken also in the fugu sake.The Fugu contains a deadly poison, the Tetrodotoxin who can damage the liver and internal organs. In Japan, people like to live dangerously and the Chef will attempt to leave just the right amount of poison for a tingling sensation to pass through the guest’s tongue without killing him.

 

 

Bullfrog

 

 

That frog has toxic substances that can cause kidney failure. Nothing to see with the delicious french frog cooked in butter and garlic…

 

 

 

 

 

The Sannakji

 

Korean people prefer to eat it raw. This octopus is dismembered, served with sesame oil and immediately proposed on a plate. The suction caps maintain their gripping power even after the octopus’ death and sometimes, people can die as a result of choking while eating Sannakji.

 

 

Blood clams

 

 

In Asia, Blood clams are sometimes too quickly boiled and conserve many viruses and bacterias who can cause Hepatitis A and E, Thyphoid and Dysentery.

 

 

 

 

Pangium Edule

 

 

Coming initially from the Indonesian mangrove the Pangium Edule can be eaten only after being a boil, soaked in water, or boil in banana leaves as he contains Hydrogen cyanide that is poisonous to human.

 

 

 

 

Monkey Brains

 

 

 

Available mainly in Asia, The Monkeys brains are eaten raw, cooked or baked. The Monkey Brain can transmit a Variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease.

 

 

 

 

Elderberries

 

 

 

To eat fully ripe and properly cooked, without leaves, twigs, and seeds as they contain  Cyanide who can cause severe diarrheas and seizures.

 

 

 

 

Cashew nuts

 

We love cashew nuts, but the raw cashew nuts found in supermarkets are in fact steamed to remove their chemical called Urushiol, a chemical found in poison Ivy. So cashew nuts cannot be eaten raw! High levels of Urushiol can be fatal. Vietnam is one of the first cashew nuts producing countries.

 

 

Rhubarb leaves

 

 

Yes, Rhubarb also grow in Asia. The leaves contain Oxalic acid and can cause trouble breathing, nausea, diarrhea, eye pain, burning in the mouth and throat … To reach the lethal dose of 25grams, a 65kg human would need to eat 5kg. So don’t eat too many rhubarb leaves!

 

 

 

Starfruit

 

 

 

If you have bad kidneys, just 100ml of this fruit’s juice can poison you because it contains neurotoxins that affect the brain and nerves.

 

 

 

 

 

Cassava

 

 

The manioc is eaten boiled fried, steamed baked, grilled or mashed and used to produce a drink called Piwarry. The Cassava contains a high concentration of Linamarin that turn to cyanide when eaten raw.

 

 

 

 

Tapioca

 

 

For the same reason that the Cassava plant, the Tapioca the root of the Cassava plant must be prepared properly to avoid poisoning.

 

 

 

 

 

Bean sprouts

 

Bean sprouts are one of the worst foods for harboring E. Coli, Salmonella, and Listeria, bacterias, that thrive in the same warm, humid conditions than sprout. So be careful where you by them!

 

 

Koi plat

 

The Koi Plat is a dish from the Isaan plateau of north-eastern Thailand consisting of raw fish, live red ants, and herbs cooked by the lime juice. The Koi plat is believed to be a cause of Cholangiocarcinoma via fluke liver transmission.

 

 

Durian

 

Eating Durian can be dangerous if combined with alcohol. Indeed the Durian contains sulfur that when ingested, makes it hard for the liver to break down the alcohol. Eat some Durian or drink, you have to choose!

 

 

 

The Thai bat soup

 

The bat meat used to prepare these local specialties can contain dangerous parasites or pathogens.If improperly cooked, the meat from these creatures can cause severe illness or even death in very extreme cases.
