THE KANAMARA FESTIVAL OR PENIS FESTIVAL – KAWASAKI JAPAN

Yes, you read it right The Kanamara Festival or Penis Festival took place last Sunday in Kanayama shrine in Kawasaki Japan. Every first Sunday of April, the festival host the singular festival of the penis and the fertility since 1977. The central theme is, of course, the Phallus, and he is reproduced here everywhere in image, lollipop, sculpted vegetable, decorations, etc

The festival is believed to have roots in the 17th century when prostitutes are said to have prayed for protection, from sexually transmitted infections at Kawasaki’s Kanamara shrine.

Today, people come to receive divine blessings for prosperity, the future of the family, harmony in marriage etc…and the parade happens in mikoshi (wooden temple walked by many porters) with three penises preserved in the temple.

A legend tells that a demon with sharp teeth was hidden in a young girl’s vagina and that he had successively castrated two young men on their wedding night. A blacksmith fashioned an iron phallus to break the demon’s teeth, and the object became a holy relic.

Novodays, the festival raises awareness about safe sex practices and fundraisers for HIV prevention.
