The last Brunei’s independence day celebration, The Royal Brunei Airlines allowed captain Sharifah Czarina Surainy, senior first officer Dk Nadiah Pg Khashiem and senior first officer Sariana Nordin to fly together in the same crew. That was a historical flight as it was the first time that the Royal Brunei company had a 100% women crew.
Sharifah Czarena Surainy became the first female South-Asian Captain three years ago. For a Bruneian lady, it is a great achievement as Brunei is one of the most conservative Muslim countries in Asia who applies the Sharia (Islamic law) since 2014. The flight destination was quite ironic because this Boeing 787 landed in Saudi Arabia, a country where women can barely drive a car. Does Brunei want to shows to other Muslims countries that you can be an Islamic state and yet fight for gender equality? Let’s hope that will bring a strong inspiration wind for every Muslim government!
