Ananas Anam Pinatex Video

Since few years, the usage of eco leather is growing in an alternative to animal leather. Ananas Anam has developed an innovative, entirely sustainable high-performance natural and sustainable textile called Piñatex™ made from pineapple leaf fibres. This material is durable, versatile, soft, light flexible and can be easily printed on, stitched and cut. To make 1 m2 of leather, they use 480 sheets of pineapple, so 16 pineapples only. Pineapple fiber is so close to animal leather that it can be use to make all accessories as wallets, jackets, bags … Dr. Carmen Hijosa had this idea after a business trip to the Philippines while she was working as a consultant to the Product Development and Design Center in the 90s. She founded Ananas Anam Ltd, who is today taking place in the Philippines, UK, and Spain.

After many years of research and developing, Ananas Anam find a way to transform pineapple leaf in an eco material looking like leather. The product is a bio-product, sustainable, cheap, biodegradable, and can be used for clothes, shoes, accessories and furniture with convincing results. Carmen Hijosa received in 2016, the Innovation Price of the Art Foundation of London.
