Today, hundreds of volunteer will be seen cleaning Saigon’s streets as the day is celebrated as Earth day. Earth day was first celebrated for the very first time on April 22, 1970, in the USA. Since 1970, The Day celebrations has grown. Today, the Earth Day Network collaborates with more than 17,000 partners and organizations in 174 countries, and more than 1 billion people are involved in Earth Day activities, making it “the largest secular civic event in the world.” In 2016, the theme was “Trees for the Earth”, with an ambitious goal of planting 7.8 billion trees – one for every person on the planet – by Earth Day 2020. This year, the theme 2017 is “Environmental and Climate Literacy”.
The event is expecting to attract 1,000 Vietnameses and expats volunteers in over five areas including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc, Hue and Hoi An to “put the trash back in its place and make Vietnam clean again.”
In HCMC, “AmCham” is cooperating with “Viet Nam Sach & Xanh” to hold a cleanup event at some places in Ho Chi Minh City in District 1 from Tao Dan Park to Pham Ngu Lao Park, in Dist 2 Neighborhood 6’s Park, 204B Alley, Nguyen Van Huong Str, Thao Dien and in Dist 7 Outside area of University RMIT, 702 Nguyen Van Linh St. This cleanup activity mainly aims at raising awareness of environmental protection as well as creating a social movement on keeping our living conditions clean and green in Vietnam.
