Signed by the Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, The Tianjin Binhai Library,  part of the Binhai Cultural Center, the new cultural space in Tianjin China, cause sensation since its inauguration just a month ago.

Since the opening more than 15,000 weekly visitors flock every week to admire this huge library of 33,700m², already presented by some media as “one of the most beautiful in the world ». Books and architecture lover are ment to have something to celebrate as the space should be able to accommodate more than a million books in a fantastic decor but if this immense library inspired by the film “Interstellar” of Christopher Nolan is really a sublime architectural project, the reality is much less phantasmagorical for the book lovers. Indeed, the majority of the books are just a ‘trompe l’œil’. The deputy director, Liu Xiufeng, explained that the atrium of this place was conceived as space “to circulate, to sit, to read or to discuss … but not to store books”. Quiete surprising for a library. Since the opening, storage problem has also forced the library management to remove several thousand books…

Sublime by its architecture, the place has also astonished some of his visitors  coming to admire it. Indeed, the unusual design of the building deliberately designed to look like a human eyeball has surprised some visitors who hurt themselves falling on the floor while trying to make their most beautiful selfie…
