L’ AFV, (the Francophone’s Association of Vietnam) launched its annual cycle of cultural conferences at the restaurant ” La Plancha ” in Thao Dien Dist 2.
For this first conference, Emmanuelle Dupasquier, a longtime resident of Ho Chi Minh City and expert of Marguerite Duras’s works invited us on a journey where Marguerite spend most of his childhood from Gia Dinh in 1914 until his bachelor year, time she left definitely Vietnam for France. Marguerite Duras indeed, will never come back in Vietnam.
This conference came with vintage photos often unpublished, from the personal collection of Emmanuelle Dupasquier. The brief passage read from the author’s novels, and the pictures allowed us to understand better Marguerite Duras’s family life and to correct some misrepresentations.
This journey recalled the architectural charm of Saigon and Hanoi in 1920-1930, the wild beauty of the southern plains of Cambodia, the complexity of the feelings between mother – daughter and her two boys, the tenderness, complicity, and Marguerite Duras’s loneliness. Emmanuelle Dupasquier’s passion revived our desire to read and learn more about this fabulous writer and pushes us to explore places shown on the picture as Hanoi’s lakes, Sadec’s markets and bridges, Cambodia’s deserted beaches, who kept all their original charm.
