His first two films were action – comedies (Good Kisses of Bruges and 7 Psychopaths), a British-themed movies, and it was hard to imagine Martin McDonagh making a psychological drama in the American midwest. This is the best definition that can be given to 3 Billboards. Here McDonagh radically changes his register and goes to something much soberer. A woman suffers from loosing, a few months earlier, his daughter, victim of a heinous crime. This woman, Mildred Hayes, masterfully interpreted by Frances McDormand, will try to revive the investigation of the murder by questioning the police, via billboards. This starting point lays the foundations of a long interrogation on the responsibility of each one in face of an event of this type.
